About The Artist

I originally trained as a potter. Having spent a year working with Robin Welch, and following my foundation course at what is now Oxford Brookes , I trained for two years on the Harrow School of Art Studio Pottery course in the early seventies. I worked for many years producing stoneware, then black and white porcelain ware.

A textiles course with the Open College of the Arts took me back to my drawing and painting roots, my father Dennis Knowland had been a painter and taught me a great deal from an early age.

Teaching at an Oxford school incorporated all these skills, but now I concentrate on drawing, painting, a little printing and ceramics

Opening of the Sota Gallery, Witney,Oxon

I made this drawing entitled ‘Family’ for an exhibition on the theme of ‘Love’ at the Sota Gallery, Witney, Oxon. It is based on a photograph of my son and his family, but is not a direct representation of them, hopefully more of an archetypal approach to the subject of young parents adoring their newborn child.

David Cameron came to officially open the gallery and was very much taken with the drawing. We had a chat about the work and I hope that the publicity surrounding David Cameron’s visit will bring lots of people to the Sota Gallery.
